No princípio o homem foi criado à imagem de Deus. Foi adornado em seu entendimento com o verdadeiro e total conhecimento do Seu criador e de todas as coisas espirituais. A sua vontade e o seu coração eram retos; todos os seus sentimentos, puros; o homem era, portanto, completamente santo. Mas ao rebelar-se contra Deus pela instigação do diabo e pelo próprio livre-arbítrio, ele se privou desses dons excelentes e em lugar deles trouxe sobre si cegueira, trevas terríveis; vão e perverso juízo em sua mente; malignidade, rebelião e obstinação em sua vontade e coração; além de impureza em todos os seus sentimentos.
