# Artigo 36

## **O governo civil.** 

Cremos que o nosso Deus gracioso, por causa da depravação do gênero humano, estabeleceu reis, governos e oficiais civis.1 Ele quer que o mundo seja governado por leis e planos de governo,2 para restringir os excessos dos homens e para que tudo transcorra em boa ordem entre eles.3 Para isso colocou Ele a espada na mão das autoridades para castigar os malfeitores e proteger os que praticam o bem (Rm 13.4). Eles têm por ofício não apenas restringir e conservar a boa ordem pública, mas também a proteção da igreja e do seu ministério para que\* o reino de Cristo possa vir, a Palavra do evangelho seja pregada em toda a parte4 e Deus seja honrado e servido por todos — como Ele determina em Sua Palavra.\

Além disso, cada um, independente da sua qualidade, condição ou classe é obrigado a submeter-se aos oficiais civis, pagar os impostos, respeitá-los e honrá-los, e obedecê-los em tudo aquilo que5 não contrarie a Palavra de Deus.6 Devemos orar por eles para que Deus os dirija em todos os seus caminhos e para que “para que vivamos vida tranqüila e mansa, com toda piedade e respeito” (1Tm 2.1, 2).\
Em razão disso reprovamos os Anabatistas e outros rebeldes, e em geral todos quantos se opõem às autoridades e aos oficiais civis, subvertem a justiça,7 introduzem a comunhão de bens, e perturbam a boa ordem que Deus estabeleceu entre os homens.\
\* As palavras a seguir foram eliminadas nesse ponto, em 1905, pelo Sínodo Geral das Igrejas Reformadas da Holanda (Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland): “toda idolatria e falso culto devem ser removidos e impedidos, e o reino do anticristo deve ser destruído”.\
